Why Talk to Us?

Most companies we work with say to us “our web site’s not working – we need Search Engine Optimisation”. We say, if your web site’s only attracting a tiny percentage of visitors to “do something” (whether that’s buying something, downloading something, enquiring about something or just viewing certain information) it’s better to get that “conversion rate” up first before spending more time and more effort on Search Engines’

“A website that sucks is still a website that sucks – if you attract more people to it – it just means that more people know that it sucks!” (C. D. Elvery)

The answer is to optimise the through-flow on your website to an acceptable level and then optimise it with Search Engines – wouldn’t you be rather converting to “sales” 2% of 1000 visitors, rather than 0.1% of 1000 visitors?

The average conversion rate on the web is approximately 2% (depending on which source you believe and which sector you are trading in), however for the majority of websites we see, the conversion rate is less than 0.2% and tends to break down as shown here. By shaving a few percentage off here and there, customers can easily achieve 5 or more times the business from the existing traffic. And that’s just to achieve “average”. Why settle for this? After all, people came to your website for a reason in the first place, so why not go for 5%, 10% or 20%?
